Heating and Cooling of Accreting Neutron Stars as a Probe of Neutron Star Interiors Liu, Helei Transiently accreting neutron stars in low-mass x-ray binaries accrete matter episodically from their low-mass companions during outburst. We show three observational phenomenon which are associated with accreting neutron stars in low mass x-ray binaries: quiescent luminosities, crust cooling and type I X-ray burst. By comparing theory with observations, we can explore the internal structure and equation of state of dense matter.
